Our Story
De Ark Grand ResidenceBuilt in 1857, De Ark Grand Residence is one of Lydenburg’s oldest remaining buildings. Originally serving as the Dutch Reformed parsonage, the house was converted into a double-story in 1893 to accommodate catechumen—rural worshippers who traveled great distances to receive instruction.
Lovingly restored and tastefully decorated, the house today reflects the timeless elegance of a bygone era, blending heritage with modern comfort. The residence features gracious guest rooms, a Victorian rose garden, and period furnishings, making it a living tribute to Lydenburg’s rich history.A Piece Of History
LydenburgFounded in 1850 by Voortrekker leader Andries Potgieter, Lydenburg (“Town of Suffering”) was established after malaria made the original settlement of Ohrigstad uninhabitable. By 1856, Lydenburg had briefly seceded from the Transvaal Republic before rejoining it in 1860. The town became a key route to Delagoa Bay, long sought by the Transvaalers as a trade outlet free from British control.
In 1873, gold was discovered nearby, and the Lydenburg Goldfields were officially proclaimed. Among the most notable finds were two large nuggets: Emma and Adeliza, purchased by President T.F. Burgers. During the First Anglo-Boer War (1880–1881), Lydenburg hosted a British garrison. Fort Mary was constructed and used during the siege. After the war, it fell into disrepair, and in 1889, some of its stones were repurposed to build a gunpowder magazine, which still stands today.
A must-see today is the Gustav Klingbiel Museum, which houses replicas of the famed Lydenburg Heads—seven terracotta masks dating back to the 5th century.
The Long Tom Pass
Gateway to the LowveldLinking Lydenburg and Sabie, the Long Tom Pass is one of South Africa’s most scenic mountain routes. Rising to 2,150 metres, it marks one of the highest points on a national road. The original wagon route, called the “hawepad”, was carved through the Drakensberg by hand in the early 1870s under President Burgers’ initiative.
By 1874, it connected Lydenburg to Delagoa Bay, enabling critical trade access. The current pass was officially opened in 1953 and later named to commemorate a Boer War skirmish in 1900, involving the famous Long Tom cannons. Remnants of the old route remain visible—look out for Die Geut, where wagon wheels left grooves in the rock, and Whiskyspruit, a stream once praised for making even poor whisky taste good.
